Paolo Randall was a young man with a dream, that sort of dream that involved great plans. In order to achieve those plans he joined the Marine Corps in order to get money for college. His parents were never too well off and college was something he'd have to work to afford. He enlisted and began to take correspondence courses even as he worked as a Marine. Near the end of his enlistment Cpl Randall was sent to Ewa Beach, HI. Check off a dream come true in that regard. What twenty something didn't get excited about being sent to an island paradise? And his big dream was to one day run a 5-Star Resort. He'd worked in many hotel jobs from the time he was old enough to work and knew that with the right schooling, and the right money, he could actually succeed. That wasn't the only way in which Hawaii changed his life however. At a luau on the base he saw a girl dancing. It was lust at first sight and he made a point to find out where the local beauty hung out. He met Leilana Kealoha and the two got to know each other in spite of her resistance. By the end of his appointment in Hawaii they were in love.
For the next year the two handled a long distance relationship and upon the end of Paolo's enlistment he and Leilana married in a beach ceremony in Hawaii. It was only after the engagement that he was able to meet her father, the owner of a handful of resorts scattered around Hawaii. The coincidence was a good one, but had nothing to do with his decision to marry her. The two settled there with him attending classes to finish his degree while she continued her own profession as a professional hula dancer/instructor. While he was finishing school he began to apprentice under Leilani's father. It wasn't too long after they got married that the couple gave birth to the first child in the family, a son. Three years later came the next two of their children, a beautiful daughter and another handsome son. A year later came daughter number two. None of them were exactly planned though their births were cause for definite celebration by the couple.
The family grew happily, each child carrying a distinct personality. The eldest daughter, Kaia, instantly took to following her mother and was quick to pick up the Hawaiian art of hula dancing. Things seemed set up for the family to make their future and stay indefinitely in Hawaii. But then an offer came that couldn't be refused. Leilani's father had obtained rights to open a new resort in Key West and offered Mr. Randall a partnership in it if he went to run it. It was an opportunity he couldn't turn down and so the family was transplanted from the Hawaiian Islands to the Florida Keys. Kaia was 12 at the time of the move and was excited for the new adventure.
Leaving Hawaii behind was sad, even though Kaia was looking forward to the new opportunities. It's hard to leave behind your friends, especially at such an awkward age but she really had no choice and at least she had her sisters for company. Perhaps her favorite thing about moving to Florida was residing in the hotel her father was running. There's definitely tons to do at an all-inclusive resort and Kaia loved it. Entertainment, pools, helping with day trips and, of course, teaching hula lessons with her mother helped to keep her occupied. By the end of the first summer she was more than ready to start school. She was eager to meet people and make friends outside of her family.
School was different from that in Hawaii, larger, a lot more diverse, and with a lot less tradition in the extra-curriculars. Kaia was a club joiner from the word go. She figured it was a good way to meet people and to figure out her likes and dislikes. She was the sort of girl that had a meeting for something or other every day. She made friends and began to grow into herself far more once she reached the high school level. She'd settled on just a few things, embracing Film Club, Literary Magazine, Volleyball, and Tennis. Sure her tastes were rather eclectic but she liked that about herself. Kaia wasn't one to care too much what others thought about what she did, at least not at first, but High School can start to change people.
It was at a party Freshman year that she met a lifelong friend. This friend was the sort that could help her through a bad time, get rid of stress, make even the most mundane of things entertaining. This friend was a friend of many known as...Mary Jane. Pot was illegal, she knew that, but she really didn't understand why. It was a habit she knew she shouldn't pick up but she couldn't help herself. It was too enjoyable really. So she hid it from her parents and did it on a recreational level. It became a fun and relaxing social hobby.
Kaia made friends but wasn't super social. She just wasn't the sort to care about popularity. The friends she does have are all quite close ones. One of her best friends is her cousin, Chanel. The two share their Spanish ancestry (and pity on those that try to call them 'Latinas') as well as their participation in Film Club. One thing Chanel definitely taught her to care about was clothing. Perhaps it was contradictory to her laid back and slightly hippie-ish approach to life but fashion became a slight obsession for her. She began to pick her clothes carefully, paying close attention to trends and labels. She likes to look good and she feels good about herself when she knows that she does.
The other strong friend in her life was Landon Gipson. She didn't exactly find him as a friend, he found her. He was her age, very good looking, but she refused to let that impress her. He was stubborn though and eventually she gave in and went out with him. The two dated for a few months but it ran its course and ended. Still, old habits die hard and the two have been on and off since, always maintaining their friendship. They were different from one another but it worked in its weird way.
Kaia isn't thinking too much about future plans yet. She's still at that point where she has occasional ideas about what she wants to be when she grows up. Certain flashes come up from time to time but currently she's happy to just...be a teenager. Unlike many she's not in a rush to grow up and is glad she still has time to be young. She wants to continue to explore herself, learn who she is and what she wants before making any life decisions.
After her high school in Florida went under and all her friends had already left, she really didn't want to stay there any longer. She talked to her parents and grandparents and asked to move back to Hawai'i. Unfortunately at their age her grandparents couldn't make that work. They couldn't take care of such a headstrong teenager. At that point her older brother, working at the resort branch in LA offered to let her come stay with him. She moved her stuff out there and was set up in a staff cottage, something she's excited about. After Christmas with the family she'll be ready for a new life in LA...and to pursue her GED. She's decided she's done with High School which her parents had to accept...as long as she works at the resort which she's doing.
